About the Author-

American Spy author Lauren Wilkinson is an American fiction novelist. Her debut novel “American Spy” was published by Random House in February, 2019 in the USA. It is also scheduled for July, 2019 Release in the UK via Dialogue Books. And a 2020 Release in Italy via Frassinelli Books.

American Spy has received honor ahead of its release and is also a 2019 Barnes & Noble “Discover Great New Writers” pick.  Its is included by the Huffington post in its “61 Books We’re looking forward to Reading in 2019”.

Wilkinson has trained writing at Columbia University and the Fashion Institute of Technology. She was a 2013 Center for Fiction Emerging Writer’s Fellow. She has also received support from the MacDowell Colony and the Djerassi Resident Artists Program. Her fiction and essays have appeared in or are approaching from Granta, The Believer, and The Millions.

American Spy Summary-

What if your sense of duty required you to let down the man you love? One woman struggles to choose between her principle and her heart. This frozen spying drama is set against a remarkable historical setting.

It’s 1986, the heat of the Cold War, and Marie Mitchell is an intelligence officer. She’s amazing but she’s also a youthful black woman running an old boys’ club. Her days are packed with tedious paperwork and she’s ignored for every high profile squad. She is given the chance to join an identical task force aimed at undermining Thomas Sankara. He is the fascinating, president of Burkina Faso, his Communist philosophy has made him a target for American intervention.

The role of women has always been undervalued in the spy world !

Even though she secretly admires the work Thomas is doing for his nation. Yes, even though she is still grieving the strange demise of her sister, whose case led her to this career path. Even though a furious part of her suspects she’s being presented the job because of her looks and not her aptitude.

In the year that follows, Marie will monitor Thomas, seduce him. She eventually, have a hand in the coup that will bring him down. But doing so will change the whole thing about what it means to be a secret agent, a lover, a sister, and a good American.

Inspired by true events–Thomas Sankara is known as “Africa’s Che Guevara”–this novel knits together a fascinating spy story. It is a distressing family drama, and a passionate romance. This is a visage of the Cold War you’ve never seen before.
